coming back with the worst coming-back post ever

March 30th, 2011 (11:05 pm)

So is anyone else doing queer_fest this year?

I have about seven good (I hope) posts stored up right now, but no time to make any at the moment. But I am still curious about queer_fest. Anyone?

Also, GIP.

GIP = gratuitous icon post.

I was setting myself up to never return with the feeling that I needed to make a post worthy of a "coming back". Eventually I just decided to make a really brief and inane post to break the silence and kill the hangup.

But are you doing queer_fest? ;)

Ummm, I had not heard of it until this post. How exactly does claiming work?

And, see, that was why I wanted to post about it, in the hopes that maybe someone who hadn't heard about it would hear about it and want to play. I don't know if you'll want to play, but now you know about it!

Prompt submission just finished, and claiming starts tomorrow and runs for a week. I think you just look at the (HUGE, omg) list of prompts and leave a comment with which one(s) you want to write. Then you have like a couple months to write it (them) or something. It's sad because it used to be lgbtfest and very popular (as I understand it), and then the mods of that dropped it and new mods picked up the model and made it queer_fest but I don't think a lot of the lgbtfest people followed it over.

I don't know why it is that I never write fanfic until there's a multifandom challenge/fest/ficathon that I like, and then all of a sudden I get obsessed and I'm like "OMG WHO ELSE IS DOING YULETIDE? WHO ELSE IS DOING femslash11?* WHO ELSE IS DOING queer_fest?" and I annoy everybody and they want to hit me. But... oh well. It's a good fest.

*Which obv doesn't exist yet, but wevs

Heeeee, you're cute.

The prompt list is really not that giant compared to porn battle, lol. I just quite easily flipped through the whole list and tabbed open the ones that caught my eye. There aren't that many; I think I want specific-er prompts than "any fandom blah blah blah story."

But yeah, I feel you: I don't really write fic unless it's for something either. /fandomfail I'm trying to make myself write MORE, though, these days, because after Yuletide I was like, God, I forgot how much PRODUCING ACTUAL WORDS means to me. Also, how have I improved when I write so little? Probs because I write in my head all the time but WHY don't I ever write anything down?!?!?! but, anyway, yeah, I seem to require prompting and/or specific inspiration? so I've done, since Yuletide, Porn Battle, Purimgifts, and I think something as a gift and something off a prompt that I needed to qualify for this Remix thing...

the fic of which is due today/in the next few days. -FLAIL- And I'm thinking I should do Script Frenzy, but I can't start that until Remix is done. And...I don't feel great about what I produced for Purimgifts? but I think a lot of that had to do with being super-stressed about my friendcipient's tastes and having to go ferret them out sneakily and then realizing they didn't like a lot of things and, ugh, stress, and it was a terrible idea and I still don't know if xe hated everything I wrote because xe hasn't really been around and defaulted and never commented. ><

BUT ANYWAY. I keep signing up for things hoping they push me to keep writing, but I worry about committing because I don't want to be stuck with something I end up feeling like I can't do.

Although. I just pared it down to four prompts I like, and...oh, it looks like you're not actually obligated to write what you claim should sudden GIANT EMERGENCY befall you. Hmmmmm.

Problem is, I don't actually want to write these prompts; I want OTHER people to write them. Hahahahahahahahaha. Maybe I will make a post where I beg my friends to go write things for me. XD

Oh, the prompts that are currently visible aren't all the prompts; right now they're processing them, and screening the ones that they've processed as they go. There are about a hundred comments' worth of prompts that are now invisible. Given that there are lots of prompts in each comment, that makes... what I think of as a lot of prompts? But I've never seen pornbattle. ;) I do agree about the "any fandom any characters" prompts, though... I sort of hate those. Even if I submitted two of them. They don't inspire me at all, although they seem to inspire some people (hence why I submitted two of them).

Yeah, it isn't a gifts challenge and there's no penalty for defaulting, but it also is just by nature (of being a challenge) not going to appeal to everyone in the world, so... your call. :) Maybe your friends will rise to the challenge...

Porn battle is fun! Despite its name, it's okay if you don't produce porn. Mine gradually lost porn content until one was G-rated. XD

It worked really well for me; I was surprised because I've always thought I HAVE to write to a deadline? and I guess I did sort of fail, because I meant to write about eleven things in eleven days (and a bonus track) and I only managed five (and a bonus track?) but they were things I actually enjoyed, more or less. I think it was good that there were lots of prompts, specific but not TOO specific, and I had freedom to jump around if I got blocked and there was no one to stress about disappointing.

Then again, I used to think I wouldn't produce anything without stress and disappointing someone was what would drive me (why for several years Yuletide was the only fic I wrote)...who knowwws.

I'm enjoying flipping around the prompts because I'm seeing people I saw over at PB. I'm kind of sensing the same ones of us enjoy writing to challenges...
